Little Herbalists: Skincare Apothecary Builder

A Learning Lab experience by Soil Rooted Remedies

Learn the Plant. Experience the Herb. Build the Apothecary.

Little Herbalists: Skincare Apothecary Builder is a hands-on, multi-week herbal learning experience designed to help young learners and their families build practical plant knowledge while creating a beginner skincare apothecary of their own.

Through guided lessons, sensory exploration, herbal journaling, safety education, and practical preparation, learners discover how plant knowledge moves from the herb itself into useful everyday skincare.

The Learning Experience

Each lesson follows a simple rhythm:

Learn

Students explore the herb’s common and Latin name, traditional uses, therapeutic actions, identifying characteristics, and important safety considerations.

Experience

Learners use sight, smell, touch, and taste when appropriate to become familiar with each plant through organoleptic study and journaling.

Create

Students apply what they have learned through guided, age-appropriate botanical skincare projects.

Build

Each lesson adds new knowledge, reference materials, and preparations to the learner’s growing skincare apothecary.

Meet the Plants

Throughout the course, learners will explore six foundational herbs:

CalendulaCalendula officinalis
Lemon BalmMelissa officinalis
PlantainPlantago spp.
YarrowAchillea millefolium
RoseRosa spp.
MarshmallowAlthaea officinalis

Together, these herbs introduce learners to different plant characteristics, herbal actions, preparation methods, sensory experiences, and traditional skincare applications.

From Plant Knowledge to Practical Skills

This course is designed to give learners more than a collection of finished projects.

Students begin by understanding the herbs themselves and then explore how botanical knowledge can be applied through preparations such as infusions, infused oils, balms, scrubs, and other skincare-focused projects.

By the end of the experience, learners will have begun building both a personal herbal reference and a beginner skincare apothecary they understand from plant to preparation.
